The Beauceron, also known as the "Beauce Sheep Dog" or "Red Stocking", belongs to the herding dog breed group. They have a short black coat with tan or grey markings. It was in the 1500s the breed is assumed to have first came to be. They were originally bred for herding and guarding sheep. These days they are popular as a herding or companionship dog. Features such as their high intelligence, courage and demand for challenges are what they are identifiable by. They are a descendant of shared ancestors with another French breed in the Briard and are assumed to originate from France.
They're identified as a medium to large sized breed of dog. The standard male measurements are 25.5-27.5 inches high and a weight of 65-110 pounds, while the female size is 24-26.5 inches tall with a weight of 65-85 pounds. They're well-known for their courageous and loyal personality. They can be suitable as a protection dog, as they are usually suspicious with people they haven't met. The breed ranks quite highly in comparison with all other breeds when learning new obedience commands, and are confirmed to be highly smart.
They are fairly suitable for a family pet, as they're good with kids. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs and cats when socialized. One simple assignment is taking care of their coat. They demand full grooming every 4 to 8 weeks, and occasional brushing through their coat once every week (more in the shedding season). They won't always be suitable for life in an apartment, but like to have a large yard that gives them space to run around.
Like a good number of medium to large sized breeds, they're largely shorter-lived with a life expectancy of 10-12 years. They are susceptible to bloat and PRA, but their primary health problem is hip dysplasia. Activities such as herding, swimming, agility and games of fetch will keep them entertained. To prevent bad behavior, they demand long (with varying routes) walks every day because of their high degree of energy.
You need to be able to meet their high demand for leadership, exercise and mental stimulation if you bring home the Beauceron. They are a good option for active owners or those with a job for them, but not the best choice for those with a less active lifestyle. Quite a lot of people find this dog quite appealing, and one of the most important reasons is seen in that it can be a great choice for defending the home and family due to its courageous and loyal nature.
