How to Boot to an External Hard Drive

    • 1). Plug in your external hard drive. You should have your operating system or other bootable program already fully installed on the external hard drive. If you haven't, consult your manual for doing that.

    • 2). Click "Start > Shutdown > Restart."

    • 3). Press the "F2" or "F1" key at the first screen that appears when you reboot the computer. If neither of these two keys work, consult your computer's manual for what key is needed to boot into BIOs.

    • 4). Press the "Right Arrow" key until you highlight "Boot."

    • 5). Press the "Down Arrow" key until you reach "External USB."

    • 6). Press the "Enter" key to select "External USB."

    • 7). Press the "+/=" key to move the "External USB" drive up. Move it up until it is the first boot device.

    • 8). Press the "Right Arrow" key until you reach "Exit." Press the "Enter" key twice to confirm the changes. You've now booted to an external hard drive.
