How to Change Brake Pads on a 2003 Explorer

    • 1). Place the wheel chocks in front of and behind the right-rear wheel to prevent the Explorer from rolling. Loosen all the lug nuts, using the lug wrench, by turning them counterclockwise until they’re finger-tight.

    • 2). Elevate the front end, using the jack, then lower it onto the jack stands. Remove the front lug nuts and wheels by hand, then set them aside.

    • 3). Slide the drop pan directly underneath the brake rotor in the right-front. Rinse the brake rotor and caliper thoroughly with the brake cleaner to remove the brake dust.

    • 4). Unbolt the right-front brake caliper with the socket set. Lift the caliper off the brake rotor, remove the old brake pads by hand, then clean out the inside of the caliper with the brake cleaner.

    • 5). Lubricate the caliper slide pins, using the white lithium grease, to prevent them from sticking. Force the caliper pistons to retract into the caliper, using the caliper piston tool.

    • 6). Insert the new brake pads by hand, slide the caliper back down over the rotor and bolt it back in place with the socket set.

    • 7). Repeat steps 3 through 6 on the left-front. Reinstall the front wheels and lug nuts, by hand.

    • 8). Lower the front end off the jack stands, using the jack. Move the wheel chocks to the right-front wheel and then lift the rear end with the jack. Place the rear end on the jack stands, then remove the rear lug nuts and wheels by hand.

    • 9). Repeat steps 3 through 6 on the right-rear and then on the left-rear. Reinstall the rear wheels and lug nuts and lower the rear end off the jack stands, using the jack.

Tighten all the lug nuts to 100 foot-pounds, using the torque wrench.
