- Dunstan hybrid chestnut trees produce larger nuts with a sweeter flavor, and they are easier to peel. The Dunstan will start to bear nuts three to five years after the tree has been planted. Nuts are harvested between mid-September and October. Trees can grow to heights of 40 feet and 12 inches in diameter.
- Chinese chestnut trees are subject to blight, a pathogen that enters the tree through a wound on the bark. As the fungus spreads through the tree, it damages tissues and kills the chestnut tree. However, the Dunstan hybrid chestnut is resistant to blight, according to Florida State Horticulture Society.
- Dunstan hybrid chestnuts trees are started by seeds, which there aren't many of, or by grafting branches to the rootstock of the Chinese chestnut tree.
