- Mint emits a strong odor that works as an immediate repellent for nearly all bugs, and even many small rodents. Since mint is completely nontoxic, and even safe for ingestion, this is the perfect repellent for fruit and vegetable-bearing plants. To use mint, either crush 1/2 cup of mint leaves into a dusting, or use mint oil. Fill a spray bottle with two cups of hot water, then pour the ground mint leaves into the bottle, or pour 2 tablespoons of mint oil into the bottle. Shake the bottle, then spray over the plant leaves. Repeat every week, or as needed to keep bugs off your plants.
- Lavender is a natural element that emits a soothing scent to humans, but makes a perfect repellent for bugs. Lavender oil is the easiest element to use when creating a bug repellent, because it requires almost no work to create a working repellent. Simply fill a spray bottle with two cups of hot water, along with 2 tablespoons of lavender oil. Spray the mixture directly onto the plants as well as onto the soil surrounding the plants. Repeat weekly to keep plants bug-free.
- Hot peppers also emit a strong odor that repels bugs. Blend a handful of hot peppers, then strain the liquid into a spray bottle. Add two cups of hot water, and spray directly onto plants.
Alternately, a less messy way to create a pepper repellent is to use hot pepper spices. Chili pepper, paprika or similar spices will emit the same repelling odor. Simply pour 2 tablespoons of the powder into a spray bottle, add two cups of hot water, and spray onto the plants.
