- Ethernet powerline products typically employ a pair of devices that each plug in to a mains electrical socket. The first device connects to a router or network switch via a standard network cable. The second device plugs into a mains socket in the room where you require a network connection. The connection between the two powerline devices uses your electrical wiring, and you can then plug a PC, laptop or other network device into the second powerline adapter.
- You'll typically find powerline adapters in houses or offices where running network cabling would be difficult or impractical. Powerline solutions used alongside existing cable and wireless networks provide connectivity in wireless black-spots or un-cabled areas.
- Powerline solutions from different companies typically aren't mutually compatible. Also, some surge-protector devices and powerline products may be incompatible with each other -- check with each product's manufacturer for guidance before use.
