- Carpet is a useful upstairs flooring material because it is often used throughout the house and is frequently used on stairs, making it an easy transition. Carpet is also easy to move and install compared with other materials, making it a suitable option for an upstairs project. Carpet will not work in an upstairs bathrooms, however, and if homeowners are only working on upstairs projects, it may be difficult to find carpet that matches other carpeting in the house.

These boards are light and are easy to install, typically using a glue-based layer. Stairs are often made with laminate flooring, making this another easy transition option. However, floating floors can produce loud noise, and they do not work well in bathrooms or other areas where moisture is common.

They also are relatively easy to transport up and down stairs. On the downside, tile is expensive compared to other options and takes more time to install.
