How to Make Fabric Stiff & Waterproof

    • 1). Plan to stiffen your material first. Purchase all-purpose white glue. Mix one part water to one part glue and stir well. Test a portion of the glue on the fabric by painting a small section of the fabric and allowing it to dry. Most all-purpose white glues will dry clear, and testing will confirm this. Cover the entire piece of fabric once tested by applying a thin layer with a paintbrush.

    • 2). Allow the glue to dry for several hours and test for strength. If the material is not stiff enough, flip it over and apply the glue mixture to the other side. Allow it to dry and test again. A second layer can be added to one or both sides until the desired stiffness is obtained.

    • 3). Apply waterproofing spray after the final application of glue has dried for at least 24 hours. Purchase waterproofing spray at a camping or outdoor store. Lay the fabric on a flat surface in a well-ventilated area. Spray the entire surface of the fabric and allow it to dry completely. Flip the fabric over and spray the other side. Follow manufacturer directions for drying times and applications. It may be necessary to apply a second coat to both sides.

    • 4). Use a seam sealer if your product has seams (such as a tent). Seam sealers typically come with small applicators like a brush or roll. Follow manufacturer instructions until all seams have been treated. Allow to dry completely.

    • 5). Test out the product by dousing it with water. Water should bead up and roll off, and the product should remain stiff. If water seeps into the fabric, spray on another application of waterproofing treatment.
