- 1). Protect yourself from inhaling or touching toxic mold or mildew. Wear protective eye glasses, rubber gloves and a face mask.
- 2). Brush the mold and mildew off the garment with a stiff nylon brush. Take the clothing outside, if possible, to prevent mold from spreading to other areas of your home while cleaning. If you can’t go outside, brush the mold over a newspaper and when you're done, roll it up and throw it away.
- 3). Soak the mold and mildew stain in 2 tbsp. of chlorine bleach for up to 15 minutes. Use non-chlorine bleach on clothing that would be damaged by chlorine bleach for up to 30 minutes.
- 4). Wash the clothing with normal laundry detergent on the highest temperature setting. When the washer is done, remove the clothing and inspect it carefully to make sure there are no lingering mold or mildew stains. If so, wash the clothing again.
- 5). Dry the clothing immediately on the highest heat your dryer offers. This will help kill any remaining mold and mildew germs.
