How to Replace a Two-Wire Thermostat for a Furnace

    • 1). Turn off the power to the furnace. Locate the circuit breaker that controls the furnace and turn it to the "off" position. If your furnace has a switch on the side, turn this off instead of turning off the circuit breaker.

    • 2). Remove the old thermostat from the wall and disconnect the wiring. The thermostat is easily removed by gently pulling it off the wall plate. Make sure you label the wiring to the terminal it connected to.

    • 3). Remove the old wall plate and mount the wall plate for the new thermostat. Use drywall anchors and screws, and check it with a level before securing it tight.

    • 4). Wire the new thermostat. Typically the red wire connects to the "R" terminal on the thermostat, and the white wire connects to the "W" terminal on the thermostat in a two-wire configuration.

    • 5). Push the thermostat on to the wall plate until it locks into place. The wall plate has plastic tabs that attach themselves to the thermostat.

    • 6). Turn the power back on to the furnace and set the thermostat to your desired comfort level.
