Purposes of Lob Wedges

When Hitting Long Is A Risk

    • On some holes, there is an obstacle right behind the green. It's not just the rough, but also sometimes a water hazard or a sand trap. If you need to get your shot to stop quickly after it lands, a lob wedge will land your ball at a sharp downward angle from its highest point in its arch, reducing the roll of the ball on the green.

    Downhill Lies

    • If your ball is on a downhill lie, it means there is a hill or sharp slope directly in front of it. You will need to hit your ball so it gets a lot of height quickly, instead of at a low angle which could strike the slope of the hill in front of you.

    Obstacles

    • If you are close to an obstacle such as a tree, you want to get your ball high into the air quickly; it's similar to instance of the downhill lie. If you hit at a low-degree angle, you are likely to strike the object with your golf ball.

    Fast Greens

    • A fast green is one in which the ball tends to roll a long distance, with friction taking more time to stop it than on an average green. If you hit a ball at a low angle, the ball will be more likely to continue rolling, according to Golf.com. The website says that the loft of the lob wedge will ensure the ball hits the ground with more direct force, sometimes even with a backspin, reducing the chance of it rolling long on a fast green.

    Taking A Natural Swing

    • When you need to hit the ball short, but don't want to change your natural swing with your golf club, a lob wedge can be used. The lob wedge is swung using your normal swing, instead of trying to "chop" at the ball with a short stroke using another club.
