Jackson is located in scenic Breathitt County on the North Fork of the Kentucky River. It was founded in 1839 and named after U.S. President Andrew Jackson. The average personal income in Breathitt County is $17,276. The state of Kansas has a population of approximately 2.7 million people. Industries in Kansas include agriculture, oil, industrial and transportation equipment, and chemical products. Jackson has a population of about 2,500 people. The Kentucky Mountain Bible College (KMBC) focuses on holy living, Biblical values and academic standards. It the largest college in Jackson, but it's a small school with a 6:1 student:faculty ratio. KMCB was founded in 1931 by Dr. Lela G. McConnell. The initial program offered was only two years long, but it was later expanded to three years. The original campus was destroyed by a flash flood in 1939. A new site was donated later that year.
The college's goal is to send students into ministry-oriented careers. Graduates live throughout the United States and in 50 other countries doing everything from inner-city outreach to international ministry. It is a self-proclaimed Bible-centered college. Kentucky Mountain Bible college is an accredited member of the Association for Biblical Higher Education.

Hazard Community and Technical College (HCTC) offers small classes and degree and certificate options. There were over 4,700 students enrolled in 2009. HCTC offers a variety of technical degrees in a community college setting. Programs include business administration, cosmetology, human services, mining technology, heavy equipment operation, radiography and welding technology. There are also a number of student organizations like the Christian Campus Ministry and the Biology Club. Tuition per credit hour is $125 for residents and $425 for non-residents, and there are scholarships available.

The Jackson campus of Morehead State University is one of five regional campuses around the state. These regional campuses help students in more rural areas get a university education. The Jackson campus was established in 1996. About 100 students graduate each year from MSU at Jackson. MSU at Jackson works with the Hazard Community and Technical College. MSU expects the Jackson campus to continue to grow in the early childhood and graduate teacher education programs. MSU at Jackson also focuses on helping adults finish their bachelor's degrees. MSU at Jackson is a symbol of Morehead State University's commitment to regional economic development and engagement.
