Aghora - Formless
About.com Rating
Aghora takes a really long time to release an album, but it is worth the wait. The group formed back in 1995, but this is only their second album, and first since 2000. It features new vocalist Diana Serra.
If you like progressive metal, Formless is an album you will really appreciate. Santiago Dobles showcases his guitar wizardry throughout the CD. Whether it is fast thrash riffs, extended solos or subdued noodling, he has first class chops.
Aghora does a nice job injecting different atmospheres into the songs. Some have a middle eastern vibe, others a Spanish feel, you'll hear jazzy elements, and of course straight ahead metal. There are many long instrumental passages in the songs, and a few tracks that are complete instrumentals, such as "Dime," a tribute to the late guitarist Dimebag Darrell.
Serra's vocals are not overshadowed at all by Dobles' powerful guitars. She has a very expressive voice, and fits in really well with the music. She's versatile and sounds equally good singing softly and subdued or belting it out. Formless clocks in at over 70 minutes and sometime could use a little more focus, but overall it's still an excellent prog metal release.
