- 1). Place two pieces of masking tape in the shape of an X over the center of the hole you want to drill. The masking tape will help the drill bit or the guiding bit catch on the tile and prevent it from slipping as you begin to drill.
- 2). Dip the bit of the drill into a bottle of cooling oil. This will lubricate the bit and prevent it from overheating as it drills into the tile.
- 3). Place the tip of the bit against the masking tape on the floor tile you wish to drill into. Start the drill slowly; once it is through the glaze or surface of the tile, increase the speed until the hole has been completely drilled. Watch the tile and bit as you drill; if smoke appears, or the drill bit begins to turn red, stop and apply more cooling oil to the drill bit.
