- 1). Scrape off loose paint and dirt from the downspouts and gutters. Fill a bucket with water and dish soap. Dip a large sponge in the soapy water and scrub both the gutters and downspouts in a circular motion until they are clean of all dirt and debris. Use a ladder to reach the gutters and the top of the downspouts. They may be chalky after drying, but that's normal.
- 2). Apply primer to all surfaces of the gutters and the downspouts with a brush. Allow the primer to dry, per the directions on the paint can. A clear acrylic bonding primer works best because it can penetrate the chalky aluminum. Do not use water-based primers, as they can cause blistering on the aluminum.
- 3). Paint the downspouts and gutters with acrylic paint, using a brush. It is best to do this in the shade so the paint does not dry too quickly. Put off painting if rain is in the forecast.
- 4). Apply a second coat if necessary to get the desired color. Make sure you apply the final coat within 48 hours after the first coat, as the top coat will bond much better if you do. Allow the paint to dry, per the directions on the paint can. Make sure the gutters and downspouts are clean after painting.
