- 1). Make a place for your children or grandchildren to play. In many cases, the attic isn't that large or has short walls and sloping ceilings that make it difficult for adults to walk across the room. Adding some drywall and bright colors to the room is a great start on creating a space made for the shorter people in the family. Turn it into a playroom or even a bedroom with bunk beds.
- 2). Set up the attic as a craft or art room. An attic isn't seen by many, and for this reason doesn't have to be perfect. As long as you can stand the bare walls, there is no need for paint and dry wall, especially if you are just going to mess it up anyway. Consider turning it into a place for you to paint, process photos or complete crafts. The plain walls and wood won't care if you spill paints or glue and neither will you. Simply clean up the attic and add the furniture you need to work on your projects. Don't forget to include storage bins for supplies.
- 3). Install a flat screen TV and some comfortable furniture to create an entertainment area for the family. Many houses come with a great room, or family room, that is supposed to function as the living room, den and dining room. This room is generally one of the first rooms that is seen by any guest and therefore must be kept neat and clean. The attic could give you the perfect hiding place equipped with a TV, couch, small refrigerator and more laid-back feel that doesn't have to be perfect at all times.
- 4). Install bookshelves along newly drywalled walls, add a desk and chairs, and you have the makings of a nice office. Call the phone and Internet company to have wires installed for phones and a computer. This will give you a space away from the hectic goings-on in the rest of the house that can distract you from your work.
