- The iPhone is a powerful smart phone created by Apple computers in 2007. The iPhone has internet and multimedia functionality, and as a result many users end up storing sensitive personal information on their phone. Due to the volume of sensitive personal information on the iPhone, users may desire to wipe the contents of the phone if it is misplaced or stolen.
- Before remotely wiping your device, consider trying to locate it with Apple's Find My iPhone application. This application will allow you to pinpoint the location of your phone so that it may be recovered. If you are not interested in recovering your phone, or if you want to wipe the information on it anyway, proceed with the remote wipe process.
- To wipe your iPhone and block use by a potential thief, go to Microsoft Outlook on your computer. Click "Mobile Devices," your iPhone should be listed. Select your device and click, "Wipe all data from device." You will be prompted several times to confirm that you wish to continue. After you complete this process, your iPhone will begin deleting sensitive information and reverting to factory defaults.
- If you do not have your iPhone configured with Microsoft Outlook, you can also remotely wipe the device by using the MobileMe service. If you have not set up a MobileMe, a Microsoft Outlook account or third-party remote wipe service to your phone, you will not be able to remotely wipe your phone. In addition, if your phone's battery is dead or the phone is out of cellular coverage, you will not be able to wipe your phone.
