Natural Colon Cleansing With Prunes

    Preparation

    • The first step in any colon cleansing should be a short fast, because fasting is the best way to remove toxins and wastes from the body. A two- to three-day fast on fresh organic vegetable and fruit juices will rest the digestive system and loosen debris in the colon. Alternatively, take only plenty of fresh water with the juice of a fresh lemon added to each eight-ounce glass for at least 24 hours before consuming prunes. If you are hungry, add clear soups and herbal teas sweetened with stevia or honey. The important thing is to consume only liquids. Do not use commercial drinks with sweeteners, colors or artificial flavors. Consult a physician before beginning a colon cleanse, particularly if you are diabetic.
      Purchase unsulphured organic prunes without sugar. Five medium prunes contain more than three grams of fiber, zero fat and fewer than 300 calories. They are a rich source of beta-carotene (vitamin A), potassium, vitamin C and iron. Because of their anti-oxidant and mineral content, prunes are considered to have cancer-fighting and blood-pressure-regulating properties. They are available in dried form all year.

    Procedure

    • When you are ready to end the fast, soak eight to 12 prunes in enough warm water to cover for 30 minutes and consume them in one meal. Follow with any leftover water. Prunes are a high-fiber food in themselves, but some people add psyllium husks or ground flaxseeds to increase the broom-like action of prunes in the colon. Additional fiber requires additional fluids; otherwise there is risk of further impaction. A good bowel movement should be experienced within six hours. If results are poor, have a second meal of prunes. Do not eat anything else until the colon is evacuated. If bowel problems, constipation or related symptoms are chronic, repeat this colon cleanse once monthly.
      To maintain colon health avoid hydrogenated and saturated (animal) fats, sugar and highly processed or fried foods. Consume enough fresh vegetables and fruits to make up half the diet and drink at least 64 ounces of water daily. Insufficient fluids harden stools, which may stay in the colon for weeks or even months. Dairy products, except yogurt or kefir, should be avoided to maintain a clean, mucus-free colon. Regular exercise such as walking and yoga practices that provide gentle massage to the abdomen increase circulation and stimulate colon function.
