Leiomyosarcoma in Cats

    Appearance

    • Leiomyosarcomas are firm, white masses.

    Prevent Leiomyosarcoma

    • Some forms of leiomyosarcoma can be preventable. Have your female cat spayed. This can significantly reduce the chances of your pet developing uterine leiomyosarcoma. Consult your veterinarian about preventative options.

    Diagnosis

    • Your veterinarian will perform a biopsy. Surgery may be performed to remove the mass depending on the cat's age, progression of the tumor and location.

    Pain

    • According to the Pet Cancer Center, "It is imperative that pets with cancer are provided with pain medication to relieve discomfort caused by the disease as well as by the treatments." Signs your cat might be in pain include licking/scratching, reluctant to move, or changes in normal behavior.

    Diet

    • A cat suffering from leiomyosarcoma needs to be fed a special diet. Stay away from commercial pet foods. They tend to be high in carbohydrates, which aren't ideal for cats with cancer. Prescribed and over-the-counter pet foods are available for pets with cancer.
