- 1). Peel the citrus fruit to prepare for testing the pH of the fruit.
- 2). Remove one section of the fruit and break open the membrane that holds the fruit inside.
- 3). Squeeze the fruit section to gather the juice. Let the juice drip into a clean container. A contaminated container may alter the results of your pH test.
- 4). Fill a clean medicine dropper with the juice.
- 5). Hold the piece of alkacid paper with your free hand. The University of Wisconsin cautions that you must use alkacid paper to determine the pH of a solution. Red and blue litmus paper identifies acids and bases, but does not determine the pH of a solution.
- 6). Drop one or two drops of citrus juice onto the alkacid paper.
- 7). Observe for changes in color. Compare the color to the included pH chart to determine the pH of the citrus fruit.
