The convenience and space of a minivan is handy. But maybe you're seeking a little sportier ride or a vehicle that's not the traditional soccer mom van. The car market provides many exciting options, some that get efficient gas mileage and others that are just plain fabulous. Auto manufacturers have produced vehicles in the past few years that are ideal for families, and still stylish enough for a night out on the town or a trip to the office. - Minivans can haul many passengers and offer comfort for the driver. But many auto manufacturers are focusing more on sports utility vehicles (SUVs). Consumers are demanding alternatives to the minivan and have clamored for SUVs, according to ForbesAutos.com. Options include smaller SUVs and hybrids with better gas mileage, such as the Ford Escape, the GMC Yukon or the Chevy Tahoe. Mercury also makes a stylish hybrid called the Mariner.
- Many families have downsized from vans to large cars to improve gas mileage. Current hybrids only help with gas mileage under certain conditions, for example when a driver travels mostly in and around town. Large cars often get better gas mileage on highways. Most large cars will hold six people, so if you need more capacity, this may not be a good option for you. However, this size car can be perfect for a family of four or less and still have a little extra room for friends.
- A new style of car born in the past few years is a crossover, resembling a model between a car, minivan and SUV. The Ford Edge was one of the first concept cars with this design. Other cars with the crossover look and feel include the Chevy Equinox and the Dodge Journey.
These crossovers tend to sit up higher, similar to the feel of an SUV or small pickup truck, but have the look and design of a car. Recent reviews in ForbesAutos.com show some of these vehicles have three rows of seats similar to an SUV. This provides room for seven or eight passengers instead of the standard six. Crossovers also have solid gas mileage numbers and options that include all-wheel drive.
