- 1). Apply for unemployment insurance benefits online at the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development's website. You will need to answer several questions about your employment situation, and the state will make a benefit determination regarding your claim. At the time of filing, select the option to have taxes withheld from your payments.
You can also call your regional Reemployment Call Center to apply for unemployment, either Freehold at 732-761-2020 or Union City at 201-601-4100 or Cumberland at 856-507-2340. If the last digit of your SSN is 0 to 3, call on Mondays, 4 to 6, call on Tuesdays and 7 to 9, call on Wednesdays. Call between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday and tell the representative that you want taxes to be withheld from your weekly benefits. - 2). File continued claims online at the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development's website. If you requested tax withholding on your initial claim, the state will continue to have 10 percent of the benefits withheld and sent to the IRS. You can also file continued claims by telephone using the telephone number for the closest One-Stop Career Center, as indicated in the paperwork sent to you regarding your initial claim.
- 3). Write to the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development if you wish to change your withholding tax status or initiate it if you did not with your initial claims. Download the Request for Change in Withholding Status form from the website and send it to Unemployment Insurance at PO Box 908, Trenton, NJ 08625-0908.
