- 1). Measure the room you want to tile and determine the square footage of the area that will be tiled. Take this number with you when you go shopping so that you'll know how many boxes of tile to pick up.
Choose your color and purchase the peel and stick tiles, adding about ten percent to the square footage to allow for cuts and waste. - 2). Once you have your peel and stick tiles selected, prepare the room that will be tiled. You'll need to sweep and mop so that the surface is dirt-free and the tiles stick effectively. You can lay peel and stick tiles directly onto sub-flooring, or you can apply them over already existing flooring if it's level and clean.
- 3). Measure one side of your room and mark the center. Measure the opposite side of the room and mark the center. Using the plumb line, snap a chalk line from the center of one side to the center of the other. Do the same for the remaining two walls.
Lay a line of tile out (with the backing still on) in each direction from your center chalked lines to make sure that you won't have any one inch lines of tile against any of your walls. If you do, move the chalk line over a few inches, and lay out tile from the new line to make sure that all the sides will be reasonable. - 4). Now you're ready to begin laying tile. Starting in the center at your marked lines, peel the paper backing from a tile and lay it so that the sides of the tile are lined up with your chalk marks. Continue until you can no longer lay whole tiles.
- 5). For the edges where only partial tiles are needed, measure the distance to the wall from each corner. Using a measuring tape or ruler, mark those measurements on the tile. You can then cut with scissors, or score with a straightedge and utility knife and snap. Fill in all the borders using this method.
When all the tile is laid, you'll need to apply pressure to it so that the glue adheres properly. You can do this with a tamper, or just a rolling pin that you put your weight on.
You can now enjoy your room's remodeled floors!
