- 1). Scrub the equipment with a scrubbing sponge moistened with soapy water. This may be the best cleaning method while you are working with the equipment. The mastic is still soft and easy to clean up. However, not all mastic will respond to soapy water. If your equipment is still gummy, move on to step two.
- 2). Scrub the equipment clean with rubbing alcohol or acetone (fingernail polish remover). One or both of these items are likely to be found in your home. Both work well to remove mastic after an installation job but before it has turned rock hard. Try one or both solvents, scrubbing hard with the scrubbing sponge followed by the pot scrubber. If you make no process, move on to step three.
- 3). Scrub hard, stubborn mastic with a scrubbing sponge moistened with mineral spirits or a methylene chloride based cleaner like Goof-Off. Work outside if at all possible. Both mineral spirits and methylene chloride give off noxious fumes.
- 4). Tackle old, nearly impossible to remove mastic with lacquer thinner, carburetor cleaner or adhesive remover. All three of these products are terribly noxious. Always work outside and wear a breathing mask while cleaning. Scrub thoroughly with your scrubbing sponge followed by a pot scrubber or 0000 steel wool.
