- 1). Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. Stow the cable end away from the battery to avoid having the cable contact the battery prior to reinstallation.
- 2). Jack the front end of the Saturn up and position the floor jacks under the frame, away from the starter, which is located on the passenger side of the engine where the transmission and engine meet.
- 3). Unbolt the starter wiring retaining nuts that hold the starter wiring in place using the socket set and universal socket extension. This may be easier with the starter mounting bolts removed, but attempting to do it in that order opens the possibility of extensive damage to the starter, the wiring and your body.
- 4). Remove the starter retaining bolts with the socket set and universal socket extension. Don't allow the starter to hang from the bolts at any time. Support the starter's weight with one hand while you remove the bolts with the other. This will be difficult in the tight confines of the Saturn's undercarriage, so prepare for a workout.
- 5). Compare the old starter to the replacement unit. You want to make sure all the connections are identical, and the starters are exact duplicates in length, width and girth.
- 6). Hold the replacement starter in position with one hand while threading the mounting bolts in with your other hand. Do not let go of the starter. Tighten the bolts back down using the socket set and universal extension. You can let go of the starter once the bolts are fully tightened.
- 7). Reconnect the wiring and thread the two wiring retaining nuts back on by hand. Tighten them down using the socket and universal combination once more.
- 8). Lower the Saturn off the jack stands with the floor jack. Reconnect the negative battery cable and start the car.
