- 1). Keep your nails clipped. If nails are too long, when you remove your contacts, you'll risk scratching them. Keep a small nail clipper on hand and check at least once per week to make sure your nails haven't grown long enough to scratch or pierce your lenses when you remove them from your eyes.
- 2). Carry extra lens cases around with you. Sometimes a contact lens can suddenly irritate your eye. If you have to take lenses out away from home, you're better off having a case to put them in. Improper lens storage can cause the lens to get scratched or torn. Keep your spare lens cases filled with lens solution. You can purchase lens cases cheaply at dollar stores.
- 3). Don't sleep in your contacts. When you sleep in contacts, tears cannot carry healthy amounts of oxygen to the eye, according to WebMD. Because of that, your contacts can get dry and stick to your eye. As you try to pry them out with your fingertips, you could scratch or tear the lens. Take your contact lenses out each night before you go to bed and soak them in solution to disinfect them. If you're falling asleep away from home, put the lenses in the extra case you keep on you.
