How to Transfer a Korean Law Degree to Canada

    • 1). Apply for assessment through the National Council on Accreditation. This council sets the guidelines for foreign law degree transfers for every province in Canada. As of 2008, the fees for the assessment for qualification to transfer your law degree is $525. Apply via mail only, as this is the only form accepted at this time. Provide documentation of legal residence in Canada or the applications for legal residency to the NCA as well. All practicing Canadian lawyers are required to be legal residents or citizens of Canada.

    • 2). Provide documentation of your Korean law degree and any law-related work experience. Based on the NCA guidelines, if you graduated from an honors program, you will need to complete 45 credit hours of training in Canadian law from an accredited Canadian law school before being able to transfer your degree. If you did not graduate from an honors program, you will be required to complete 60 credit hours of training in Canadian law, in addition, you will also need to complete and pass five to 10 examinations on Canadian law administered by the NCA.

    • 3). Complete and pass examinations as prescribed by the NCA. You will be tested on subjects such as foundations of Canadian law, Canadian criminal law and procedure, evidence and principles of Canadian administrative law. As of 2010, each exam costs $25 and you must register through the NCA at least 10 days before the examination date. The NCA will tell you which examinations you need to register for based on your accumulated experience and training.

    • 4). Apply to your provincial law society. You can do this once your degree has been approved for transfer through the NCA. You can find a list of Canadian law societies on the Federation of Law Societies of Canada website (see References section). All practicing Canadian lawyers are required to be members of their provincial law societies.
