Becoming You

Becoming You means becoming who you really are. This article will give you one exercise to help you along the path to becoming the real you.

You Are in Charge of You

While many people will tell you what to do, how to do it, and even WHEN to do it, only you can make a decision to do something. Sometimes this fact might empower you; sometimes it might make you sad, but it is a fact nonetheless. You are in charge of your destiny. Take steps today to decide how to live your life.

Define Who You Are

Who are you, really? Do you even know? So many times we wear different masks for other people for so long that we forget who WE truly are. One way to determine who you are is to list activities you truly enjoy. Then, write at least two reasons WHY you like the activity. You might be surprised.

When I did this exercise, travel was one of my top activities. One of the reasons I enjoyed it was because of adventure. Until that moment, I had not really thought of myself as all that adventurous. But when I listed a few more activities, it became obvious that I craved adventure. So now I see myself as adventurous and act accordingly.

Take about ten minutes to do this exercise. Don't think too hard; just jot down what comes to mind.

Determine Your Values

The activity you just completed will help you determine what it is that you value, and whether or not any of those values are in conflict with one another. If you value adventure and security pretty highly, then you are going to have a problem.

This exercise helps you see what it is that is most important to you, and it allows you to resolve those conflicts that come up. If you find that you desire both adventure AND security, you have work to do. Figure out which one you enjoy the most and plan your activities around that. Base what you do on WHO you ARE and you will find that your life gets happier pretty quickly.
