Established in the 1920s, Pemberton Heights is a historic Austin neighborhood that has been named by Town and Country Magazine as one of the 25 Platinum Addresses in the United States. The neighborhood has drawn politicians, artists, and successful businessmen, and boasts well-known homes such as the Pemberton Castle and The Goodfried House. In fact, many homes are designated with Texas Historical markers.
Just three miles from downtown, the area is bordered by Westover Road to the north, Windsor Road and West 24th to the south, Lamar Boulevard to the east, and MoPac to the west. A walk through the neighborhood will reveal upscale homes that are surrounded by large lawns and trees. It's common to find Tudor mansions, brick bungalows, colonial traditional, and Old World Italian-style, among many other styles. From January 2009 to May 2010, homes were sold at prices ranging from $415,000 to $1.75 million and spanned areas of 1,700 to about 5,900 square feet.
It draws both long-time Austin residents and families, as the neighborhood is very family-focused thanks to its active neighborhood association. The Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Association aims to protect and preserve the neighborhood's history and unique charm. It also holds several events throughout the year. For those who love the outdoors, Pease Park sits nearby and spans 42 acres of green space for families to enjoy. Its home to a picnic area with barbeque pits, basketball and volleyball courts, playground, and a multipurpose field. The 9-hole Hancock Golf Course sits on 38th Street, just two miles away, and is noted as the oldest golf course in the state of Texas.
The Jefferson Square Shopping Center is located along 38th Street and features retail stores that sell everything from fresh-roasted coffee to dollhouses. It's also home to a few dining venues for residents to enjoy. For groceries, residents can check out the Wheatsville Coop, Randall's Food & Drug, or Central Market – all are within a mile of the area. Additionally, the Pemberton Heights neighborhood is less than a mile away from the UT Campus where residents will find several dining options and coffee shops, and many retail stores.
Children in the neighborhood will attend classes at schools within the Austin Independent School District. This includes Casis Elementary, O. Henry Middle School, and Stephen F. Austin High School. There are also several private schools located nearby including St. Austin's School, The Girl's School of Austin, St. Martin's Lutheran School, Day School, Hyde Park Baptist School, and Ace Academy.
