- While refinishing cabinets or otherwise altering their appearance can be a complex job, crafting new cabinet pulls is relatively easy. It is a cost-effective and simple way to dress up your cabinetry. If your cabinets could use a bit of sprucing up, spending some time on your cabinet pulls could do just the trick.
- If your cabinets have plain-Jane handle pulls, add some excitement with wire and bead decorations. To create these decorations, purchase heavy-gauge wire and glass beads in colors found in your decor. Look for beads that are made of thick glass that can withstand the rigors of daily use and be cleaned easily. Pulls can become grubby over time.
Using pliers, cut lengths of the heavy-gauge wire about two to three times the size of your current cabinet handles. String beads on these wire lengths. Wrap the wire securely around your cabinet handles in a circular fashion, securing them at the end by doubling the wire back and crimping it with your pliers. - Make your current knob pulls a bit more exciting with simple button additions. To begin this craft, remove the cabinet pulls, and take them to a craft store. Select buttons that cover the entire end of the knob. Buy the same buttons, or create an eclectic look by mixing and matching buttons. After selecting your buttons, secure them to your pulls with hot glue. This option is particularly appropriate for a room that you use for crafts, as it gives the space a decidedly crafty feel.
- Swap out your standard round knob pulls for shaped options with a bit more interest and appeal. Purchase some small pre-cut wooden shapes at a craft store. Look for shapes of this type in the general craft section. You can find thick wooden cutouts, such as teddy bears or clouds that are intended to be painted and used as decorative pieces. Paint or finish these wooden shapes to suit your taste and match your space.
Remove your existing pulls, and put these new ones in their place, using a drill to create a pilot hole and screwing them on with the same screw you used to attach your previous pulls. Place a thick washer or stack of several thin washers behind each new pull to ensure that it is slightly away from the cabinet. Try this idea to jazz up a nursery, replacing the pulls on your baby's changing table cabinets or drawers with ones shaped like bunnies or clouds, matching them to the room decor. - Show off your artistic ability by creating decoratively painted knob pulls. Purchase new round or wooden cabinet knobs, or sand down your existing wooden ones to create a surface appropriate for painting. Using a detail brush and wood craft paint, create one or more designs of your choice on these pulls. After allowing your painted designs to dry, cover the pulls with shellac to protect your work. To make your pulls especially attention-getting, consider matching your handiwork to the cabinet contents. For example, paint tiny dishes on the pull for your dish cabinet and tiny cans on the pull for your pantry cabinet.
