- Chrome exhaust tips can be found quite easily. If you want to shop in person for the tips, start with your local muffler shop, which will have a large selection to choose from. As an added bonus, it can install the tips for you. Local auto parts stores like NAPA and Auto Zone will have tips in stock. Also check with the dealer that sells your make and model to see if it offers any OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) chrome tips.
Online is where you'll find the widest selection. There are usually hundreds of chrome tips in a variety of styles and sizes available on eBay. Also check with performance parts companies like Summit Racing and Jegs or go directly to the manufacturer, which includes companies like Ansa and Pilot (see Resources). - When sizing an exhaust tip, make sure that the inside diameter of the exhaust tip is larger than the outside diameter of your exhaust pipe for proper fit. As far as the size of the exhaust opening, there is a wide range. Don't go too large here, since a coffee-can-sized exhaust usually looks rather silly.
There are a few choices for the style of the opening, including round, oval, square and rectangular. The edges can be sharp or beveled, depending on the look you are going for. You can get single outlet or dual outlet tips. If you already have a dual exhaust system, installing a pair of dual tips results in an aggressive-looking quad exhaust. Resonated tips are designed to alter and deepen the sound of your exhaust, though they do not alter performance. - Chrome exhaust tips are generally durable and only need to be washed regularly and then polished with a high-quality chrome polish to keep them looking good for years. Most chrome tips simply bolt on to your existing exhaust pipe with the supplied bolts. Occasionally, tips may need to be welded on by a muffler shop. Also, if the tip sticks out too far, you may have to have it trimmed and installed by a muffler shop.
