What Is the Proper Way to Power Wash My House?

    • 1). Cover all plants and vegetation with drop cloths before beginning the power washing. Move any items away from the home exterior. Remove any shutters and wash separately.

    • 2). Plug an electric power washer into an electrical outlet. Connect the washer to the outside water faucet with the included hose and turn the water on. Secure the nozzle tightly to the spray wand. Add a cleaner such as Simple Green to the detergent chamber. Gas operated models will have to have the detergent added via a siphoning device. Read the operating instructions for your particular make and model.

    • 3). Adjust the PSI using the dial indicator. Turn the dial to a pressure no greater than 1200. If the pressure is too high it will damage the siding.

    • 4). Turn on the electronic ignition or pull-start the engine if it is gas operated. Spray a sidewalk or driveway area to get a feel for how the power washer works.

    • 5). Begin spraying the siding at a distance of 3 to 5 feet. Angle the spraying wand downward as much as possible. Wash from the bottom of the house to the top. Work in sections 10 feet wide.

    • 6). Begin rinsing the home exterior from the top to the bottom. Rinse the detergent off in 10 minutes or less. When dirt and soap run down the siding and begin drying, it will leave permanent stains.

    • 7). Continue the process of washing and rinsing around the exterior of the home. Allow a few hours to completely dry. Uncover plants around the edges of the home. Reinstall shutters if any were removed.
