- 1). Set aside a weekend for a major rehaul. You need to make the time to give your home a fresh de-cluttered start and that means that you have to plan for it. Prepare to spend at least a weekend going through all the rooms and your house and getting rid of the clutter.
- 2). Start with the most cluttered room. If you start with the rooms that don't have as much clutter, you'll feel tired by the time you get to the most difficult room. Instead, choose the room that has the most clutter, which is probably the kitchen or living room.
- 3). Put all the clutter into the middle of the room. Starting in one corner, go through the room and put anything that is not in the right spot into the middle of the room.
- 4). Give everything a place. One of the biggest causes of clutter is not having a place to put something. Instead, you'll just leave it out. Purchase containers to keep your home organized. Baskets are an attractive way to do this, but you can use plastic containers as well. Be sure to buy plenty before your designated cleaning weekend.
- 5). Let go of the things you don't need. Undoubtedly, you're going to start turning up things that you don't really need but have been holding on to anyway, such as old magazines or toys that your kids are too old for. Throw these things away, get them ready for a garage sale or donate them to a charity.
- 6). Go through every room in the house. Repeat the above de-cluttering steps for each room in your house.
- 7). Stick with your organizational habits. If you want your home to stay organized and clutter-free, you have to stick with the new habits. Be sure to always put things into their place immediately after you finish using them.
