- With the right knowledge, you can paint outer space scenes using spray paint as your medium. Using materials that may already have at home can help you create colorful martian landscapes. Also, there are some safety tips that will help make sure you can keep painting for a long time to come.
- To add texture to your paintings, use materials like wax paper and aluminum foil ,which may already be laying around your house. Lightly crinkle them, then lightly straighten them out, and press to freshly sprayed paint. This creates the look of rocks and mountains. Also, it will add layers and depth to your painting. Use stencils to create planets and moons. Make stencils out of any round object, like soup cans or lids from empty popcorn canisters. Sponges can also create texture in your picture. Painters tape is very useful for creating borders as it will stay on, put it will not take paint off when you remove it.
- Use glossy spray paints. The cheaper the spray paint, the more solvents that are in it. The colors will still be bright, but the solvents will cause it to run more easily. Use poster board that you find at any craft or office supply store, but make sure one side of it is glossy. Paint on the glossy side of the board. For cleaning up, use mineral spirits, also available at craft or hardware stores.
- Use an old piece of wood that is larger than the poster board to paint on. Use a few small piece of duct tape and tape the backs of the corners of the poster board to the wooden board. This ensures that the poster board does not move around while you are painting. Also, the wooden board will allow you to turn the painting so it is easiest for you to work with.
- Spray paints contain toxic chemicals so take safety precautions. Wear latex gloves because the paint can seep through your skin if it is left on for too long. Most importantly, wear a face mask. This will keep out harmful fumes from the the paints as well as over spray. Over spray happens when paint splatters back at you since it is hitting the paper with force.
