Is there something like healthy junk food? No, not really.
However, you might be able to get some healthy foods from a junk food place which could be considered healthy junk food.
Think something along the way like salads or wraps to get an idea what healthy junk food could be.
But that is kinda easy, right.
Let's look at this topic a little closer and help you to make better choices when eating at one of those places the next time you're there.
Here are some quick tips to make the meal you are going to eat a little healthier.
Rule #1: Always refuse the cheese.
Cheese contains a large amount of fat and therefore adds unnecessary calories to burritos, sandwiches, or salads.
This one hit me personally very hard as I always enjoyed Qdoba's Steak Nachos with Sour Cream and Cheese.
However, the Nachos still taste great even without the cheese.
Rule #2: Avoid the "fried" if you can choose "grilled".
This one is simple.
Fried foods have more calories, more fat, and more sodium.
So, if you have the choice then choose the Grilled Chicken Sandwich over the fried version.
Rule #3: Avoid the Sodas.
Sodas are loaded with sugar and carry no nutrients.
All they do is adding empty calories that are hard to burn off.
Rule #4: Avoid "white bread".
This applies to white sandwich bread as well as burger buns.
Go for wheat to get the option with the lowest health impact.
It's still not great, healthy bread, but at least the damage is minimized as much as possible.
Rule #5: Unsalted fries.
Order the fries unsalted and you are most-likely getting a fresh order.
Get salt on the side and use it carefully.
The result will be a large reduction in Sodium intake.
There are many more ways how you can eat a little more healthy at the junk food places.
Personally I have been cutting off my junk food intake by 95% and maybe you'll find me at McDonald's once a quarter (kids want to go there - you know) and even then I try to make a healthy choice in regards to which food I am going order.
My current favorite is a Premium Bacon Ranch Salad (without chicken) which comes in at 140 calories per serving and only 300 mg of Sodium.
