- 1). Cut the legs off a pair of jeans just below the fly, being careful to leave inside pockets intact. Measure around the lower part of the cut off jeans and write this measurement down.
- 2). Determine how long you want to make your finished skirt. Try on the top part of the jeans and measure from the bottom of the jeans to where you would like the bottom of your skirt to be. Decide how many ruffles you want and measure where you want them to fall.
- 3). Measure and cut front and back pieces for your fabric ruffles. Use the length you determined for each ruffle -- plus an inch and a half -- to measure the length. Determine the width of each ruffle by multiplying the measurement of the bottom of the jeans by one and a half, then dividing it in half -- and adding one and a quarter inch to that measurement.
- 4). Fold the lower hem of each ruffle under by a half inch and iron flat. Fold under again by a quarter inch, iron and hem using a sewing machine and matching thread.
- 5). Lay the ruffle pieces on top of each other wrong-sides facing in. Start with the longest ruffle pieces and then place the shorter ruffles on top in order. Align the side seams together and the top unfinished edges together. Pin at the top.
- 6). Sew the top of the skirt ruffles together at the unfinished edge, using a loose stitch with a half-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins and gather the skirt by pulling on this thread, until it matches the bottom of the cut off jeans in diameter.
- 7). Pin the ruffles to the bottom of the cut off jeans, matching the side seams together. Turn the skirt inside-out and sew the side seams of the ruffles together leaving a 5/8-inch seam allowance. Sew the jean bottom to the top of the ruffles with a quarter inch seam allowance. Turn right side out, press and top stitch, if desired.
