How to Decorate an Inset Wall

    Shelves

    • 1). Measure the width of your inset wall.

    • 2). Purchase a shelving kit that will match your walls' dimensions and install the shelving according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 3). Place books, pictures, mementos or knickknacks on the shelves.

    Painting

    • 1). Apply painter's tape around the outside edges of the inset wall area.

    • 2). Use a roller to apply paint to the inset wall that complements the color in the rest of the room. Use a paintbrush to cut in the paint at the outer edges.

    • 3). Place a lamp, a piece of furniture or a plant in front of the inset wall to add visual interest.

    Pictures

    • 1). Purchase picture frames in a finish works with the other furnishings in the room -- contrasting or matching in color or material. Use varying frame sizes to give the picture collection a professional design look.

    • 2). Place the pictures of your choice into your frames.

    • 3). Lay out the framed pictures in various patterns until you find one you like. Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark where you want the frames to hang on the wall.

    • 4). Nail the picture-hanging hooks into the wall at the marks you made.

    • 5). Hang the pictures on the hooks. Use a pocket level to make sure the pictures are hanging straight.
