      Preparing for a career in land surveying requires completion of education requirements as determined by the Illinois Division of Professional Regulations. Education required to become a professional land surveyor-in-training as per the Illinois Professional Land Surveyor Act of 1989 requires applicants furnish proof of completion of a bachelor's degree in land surveying or a bachelor's degree in a related science and 24 credit hours in land surveying. Several colleges and universities in Illinois offer programs enabling students to meet the education requirement.

    Southern Illinois University-Carbondale

    • Southern Illinois University-Carbondale offers a surveying program through its College of Engineering. Students completing this four-year program earn a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Students complete 19 core engineering courses and eight surveying specific courses. The eight surveying courses meet the requirement to attain a Surveying Certificate and sit for the professional land surveyor-in-training examination. Students must complete the civil engineering cooperative education requirement featuring participation in hands on professional experiences. In addition to courses taken under the College of Engineering, standard undergraduate credit hours are necessary to attain a degree. According to the Southern Illinois University Carbondale 2010-2011 Catalog, all students must complete 41 credit hours of basic skills in English, speech communication, mathematics, fine arts, health, humanities, science, social science, diversity and interdisciplinary issues.

    Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville

    • Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville prepares students for licensure as surveyors-in-training through its Department of Construction. The Department of Construction offers a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management with a specialization in land surveying. Students attain a minor in business administration concurrently. According to the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville 2010-2011 Catalog, this four-year program requires completion of 139 credit hours. Land surveying courses make up 24 of the 139 total credit hours and prepare students to take the professional land surveyor-in-training examination. The remainder of coursework is divided between general education, construction, business, natural science and mathematics. Senior students participate in the construction management internship program. Prerequisites for eligibility include achieving a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and receipt of a 10-hour safety certificate from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Internships are coordinated through the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Career Development Center and require completion of 300 hours of practical experience.

    College of Lake County

    • The College of Lake County offers several programs that prepare students for careers in surveying. The Associate of Applied Science in Civil and Environmental Technology and the Certificate in Surveying and Civil Technology allow students to work as land survey technicians. The two-year associate degree requires completion of at least 65 credit hours. Coursework is general education, civil and environmental technology and physics. The one-year certificate requires completion of 25 credit hours. Coursework prepares students to complete the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping level one survey technician examination. Those wishing to pursue licensure as a surveyor-in-training may complete initial requirements through the associate degree program. Students complete a two-year program including general education courses in the areas of communication arts, social sciences, physical and life sciences, mathematics, humanities and fine arts. Major specific courses include 17 credit hours in surveying, mathematics and physics. Students must transfer to a higher education institution in order to complete the additional requirements necessary for the professional surveyor-in-training examination.
