How to Figure Gallons Per Hour in Drip Irrigation

    • 1). Place a bucket under your outdoor water spigot. Make sure you know the exact size of your bucket (1 gallon, 2 gallons and so on).

    • 2). Open the spigot so that the water runs at full force into the bucket for 30 seconds, and then turn the water off. Check the water level and determine how much is in the bucket (e.g. a 5-gallon bucket that is half full means you collected 2.5 gallons of water). Write the amount down on a piece of paper.

    • 3). Use your calculator to find the sum of 60 minutes divided by the number of seconds you ran the water. (In this case, it is 30 seconds, so the equation would be 60 divided by 30 equals 2).

    • 4). Multiply the amount of water collected (2.5) by the sum of Step 3 (2). The answer in this instance would be 5.

    • 5). Multiply 60 by the answer found in Step 4 to arrive at the total gallons per hour that the drip irrigation system will receive from the water supply. In this example, the water supply delivers 300 GPH.

    • 6). Check the specifications of the drip irrigation system you want to install to make sure that your water supply's GPH will adequately meet the system requirements.
