How to Draw a Light Microscope

    Draw a Light Microscope

    • 1). Using a ruler, draw at the bottom of the page a rectangle about 1 inch high and 5 inches long. Extend the right side of the rectangle upward with a line approximately 6 inches high, then begin to curve the line for 3 more inches to the left at a 45-degree angle. Draw the same line 1 1/2 inches to the left, then connect the lines at the top, making the arm of the microscope.

    • 2). Draw two circles inside each other at the base of the arm. These are the fine focus and course focus knobs. Halfway up the arm, draw a rectangle 4 inches long and 1/4 inch wide, extending from the arm to the left. Below the rectangle, draw an oval 1 inch to the right of the left side. The top line of the oval should touch the bottom line of the rectangle. This is called the diaphragm, which holds the petri dish with the specimen you are observing.

    • 3). Add the light directly below the diaphragm. Sketch a rectangle approximately 1 1/2 inches wide and 1 inch tall, sitting on the base. Line up the diaphragm and light so the drawing is accurate to a real microscope.

    • 4). Sketch a rectangle intersecting the top of the arm at the left corner. Draw the rectangle as wide as needed so that the left side of the rectangle matches up with the left side of the diaphragm. Make the rectangle about 2 1/2 inches tall. Round the edges of the rectangle and erase any excess lines.

    • 5). Draw the eyepiece at the top right hand corner of the top rectangle. Sketch another rectangle about 2 inches long and 1 inch wide at a 45-degree angle.

    • 6). Finish the microscope by drawing the lens. The lens is below the larger top rectangle of the arm and directly above the diaphragm and light. The diaphragm, light and lens must be aligned for the microscope to be accurate. Draw a square, 1 1/2 inch wide and 1 1/2 inch tall, below the top part of the base. Draw three small rectangles, varying slightly in length and emerging from the bottom of the lens .These are the objective lenses.

    • 7). Add hinges, eye piece pads and more lens focus knobs to make the drawing more or less complicated depending on your skill level.
