- 1). Search the library or bookstore for "Just Right" books. These are books that are on a child's reading level. Think of riding a bike. If you are pedaling uphill, it feels too hard while cruising downhill requires no effort. "Just right" is riding on a flat surface with just a few small hills or bumps. Pick books the students' can read about 90 percent of the words to practice fluency.
- 2). Model fluent reading. Read aloud to the children. Point to the words as you read, so they can see how you are saying the words. Stop at the end of each page and reflect on the text's meaning so they can understand that you are making sense of the story as you read.
- 3). Have children read text orally. Allow them to practice reading the same text multiple times. Monitor their reading and help them decode difficult words and make corrections. Ask them questions about the text's meaning. It is important to make corrections for repeated mistakes and to help with difficult words. However, do not read each word the child does not immediately read or he will count on you too much. Also, do not nitpick over each mistake, or reading will become an avoided chore for the child.
