- Knitting is a common technique when it comes to making scarves with yarn. One of its advantages is that it lets you make a scarf that is very dense or fine. On the flipside, one drawback to knitting a multi-colored scarf is, due to the obvious right side and wrong side, it can be difficult to make it reversible without a lot of extra work.
- Crochet is similar to knitting in that new loops of yarn are pulled through existing fabric. However, crochet creates a very different stitch texture. Carefully examine different crochet stitches to get the look you want. Some people find crocheting to be easier because only one hook is used at at time. Another benefit to crocheting is that color changes are easier to conceal so you can provide a more polished look.
- Felting occurs when yarn made of natural animal fibers is introduced to heat and friction. The cuticles of the fiber raise and lock together to form a solid, extremely warm and wind resistant fabric. Felting yarn is an easy way to make a winter scarf. While the construction method doesn't matter, the density of the fabric does. If the fabric is too loose, the fibers cannot cling together. If the fabric is too dense, the fibers won't have room to move. Felting can transform your yarn and handmade scarf into a beautiful, unique garment.
- If manipulating needles and hooks sounds too complicated, try finger knitting. This technique lets you make fabric from yarn using only your fingers. Finger knitting makes a fabric with more drape and is best suited to decorative scarves that are not needed for warmth.
