5 Benefits of Joining a Photography Forum - 5 Things to Look For

If you're a professional or enthusiast photographer it can be tough to know where to spend your online time in a way that will most benefit your business and advance your knowledge at the same time.
Of course there's the obvious options like Facebook & Twitter, promoting your business via a website and blog.
But these options seem to take of your time and not really offer much in return.
Of course in-person workshops and trade shows are truly the best tools in your box, and I'll say that despite all of the advances in technology.
Something about meeting people in person and pulling out that old fashioned warm smile and handshake still trump online promotion in my opinion.
It's also good to interact with other industry professionals, rather than simply preaching your product to your prospects.
One type of online environment that offers this ability is joining an online photography forum.
Photography forums can be beneficial for many reasons.
Here are 5 things to look for.
1) Photo Storage - Can you upload and store your images? How much does it cost? Do you have a public profile where people can view your gallery and thus promote your business? If not, it may be time to reevaluate.
2) Community Critique - Whether constructive criticism or people telling you that they don't care for your images due to specific composition rules or lighting, this feedback can be crucial to you developing your craft, and improving your skill set.
3) Photography Gear Classifieds - If you can find a forum with this service it's really nice for selling your gear or shopping new used gear.
Usually photographers take good care of their equipment so it can help to buy from a community of like minded individuals.
4) Access to Photography Articles -Does your forum of choice have access to photography articles? Do they cover various topics, from digital photography tips and tricks and new technology, to best business practices of running a photography business.
Are they offered for free or is there a subscription fee? If not you should consider looking for a forum that offers this information.
5) New Ideas - These days, the photography industry is flooded with $50 offers from college kids with a $500 DSLR.
You have to stand out in the crowd.
By being involved in a forum you get the chance to see what others are doing and take what you like (to implement into your strategy) and leave what you don't behind.
If your Photography Forum of choice does not offer those 5 things, I highly recommend looking into your options.
Your time is limited (especially if you're busy shooting).
Good Luck and Happy Shooting!!
