- 1). Start the engine and allow it to run until it reaches normal operating temperature on the dash gauge. The engine should be warm while making this adjustment.
- 2). Disconnect the negative battery cable, using an 8 mm wrench, from the battery located in the left front corner of the engine compartment. Remove the air cleaner wing nut. Lift the air cleaner and air filter from the top of the engine and remove them from the engine compartment.
- 3). Remove the three 10 mm bolts that pass through the top of the passenger side valve cover. Lift the valve cover from the engine and slide it towards the firewall. Lift the front of the valve cover and pull the cover from the engine compartment. If accessories, such as the A/C compressor or power steering pump are in the way, consult the service manual for instructions on how to remove them before removing the valve cover.
- 4). Clip the rocker arm splash guards over the rocker arms. These guards help minimize the mess caused by engine oil being pumped through the rocker arms when the engine is running. Start the engine
- 5). Loosen one rocker arm nut, located in the center of the rocker arm, using a 5/8-inch socket, long extension and ratchet, until the rocker arm taps audibly. Tighten the rocker arm nut until the tapping sound stops. Tighten the rocker arm nut an additional 1/2 turn. As you tighten the rocker arm, the engine speed will change. Go slow enough, when tightening the nut, to prevent engine stall.
- 6). Repeat this for the remaining seven rocker arms. Stop the engine and remove the splash guards. Reinstall the valve cover and accessories using new gaskets on the valve cover. Repeat the procedure for the driver's side rocker arms.
