- 1). Evenly coat the concrete with waterproofing paint. Give the paint about 24 hours to dry and begin working, or more if it is humid when you start the project. Place several large fans around the room for effective air circulation.
- 2). Cover the entire water-proofed floor with the plastic sheeting, using the duct tape to seal the plastic seams and tape around the border of the room. Make sure the duct tape doesn't cover any trim because it will be visible when you lay the carpet.
- 3). Split the room into square sections to make laying plywood easier. Measure each section so you know what sizes to cut the plywood with the saw. Lay the plywood down one section at a time and completely cover the entire floor.
- 4). Drill the concrete screws through the plywood into the floor, securing each piece of plywood. Drill screws every 12 inches or so along each piece of plywood until all pieces are securely attached to the floor.
- 5). Nail the tack strips around the perimeter of the wall using the nails and hammer. Hammer a nail on each middle and end of the strip, making your floor ready for laying padding and carpet.
- 6). Cut the padding with your utility knife or razor blade, completely covering the floor once it is cut. Using the staple gun, staple the padding down in each corner and sporadically in the middle of each sheet to secure the center.
- 7). Cut the carpet to size using the knife and lay it down, leaving about an inch too long on the edges. The cutting must be precise so the job doesn't look sloppy. Tuck the edges into the baseboard and make sure the tack strips grip the carpet. With the knee kicker, make sure the carpet is pulled tight, then tuck the excess into the baseboard once more.
