Housing an impressive collection of archaeology and art, Baroda Museum was founded by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad in 1887. The varied and unique collection at the museum embodies its founder's taste and foresight. It is a rich collection highlighting sculpture, art, ethnology and ethnography. Some paintings at the Picture Gallery are original masterpieces. Attracting visitors from all parts of the country, the gallery's collection include excellent works of British painters Constable and Turner. However, for those who visit the museum, a blue whale's skeleton as well as the Egyptian mummy, are popular draws. Other interesting exhibits include oils by several European masters, a fully fledged gallery of Tibetan Art, a collection of Mughal miniatures and famous Akota bronzes going back to the 5th Century AD.
It is said that the founder himself procured the priceless items and entrusted the work to art connoisseurs and various scholars. Owing to his unwavering dedication, the museum today has some very rare exhibits in its possession and is of international repute as being one of the best museums in the East. Open daily except Monday, Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery are located in the expansive park known as Sayaji Bagh in Vadodara, India.
The picture gallery and the museum are two different two-storied buildings designed by Major R.N. Ment and R.F. Chisholm. Both these buildings are of Indo-Saracenic architectural style. The selection of objects at the Picture Gallery and Baroda Museum has been assembled by the Foundation for Cultural Inventory which is a non-profit, independent organization involved in documenting and creating inventories of Flemish and Dutch art at museums outside North American and mainstream European countries.
