Anxiety Treatment - Past and Present

In ancient times, people with anxiety symptoms were presumed to be possessed by the demon.
Some were of the view that spells had been cast upon them by witches and sorcerers.
Needless to say, these groups of anxiety sufferers were misunderstood.
As a result they were often subjected to hocus-pocus treatment that had little or no beneficial effect on themselves.
Some so called cures even proved to be life threatening.
With the advent of medical science, psychology and psychiatry, the understanding of the human mind, its processes and interactions have been well researched and better understood.
Consequently, accurate and greater insights have been obtained regarding the phenomenon of anxiety.
As such, the treatment of anxiety has progressed and become much easier over the years.
The treatment of anxiety and its related conditions is by no means straightforward or simple.
Nevertheless, it is a condition that can be addressed and treated successfully.
A multi-pronged approach is usually of most benefit when compared to using a single treatment modality.
Most psychiatrists utilize therapies such as relaxation techniques and cognitive behavioral therapy to treat anxiety.
These therapies help to identify and treat the root cause of anxiety.
Medications such as sedatives and antidepressants are usually reserved for uncontrollable and severe cases.
In addition medication serves only as a temporary measure to provide relief to the patient and will eventually be gradually stopped.
People with anxiety disorders must not forget that anxiety is a condition of the mind and is a learned process.
In this condition, one must learn to control the mind rather than allow the mind to control oneself.
If one is able to control ones thoughts and responses to stressors, it is highly likely that a cure can be achieved.
