How to Plant With Perlite

    • 1). For potting plants: Mix 1 part horticultural perlite, 1 part peat moss and 1 part composted wood product (shavings, sawdust, or bark) for use in containers and pots. This mixture will weigh considerably less than pure soil, which is an advantage if you need to lift and move your potted plants or if they are sitting on a structure such as a balcony.

    • 2). For planting shrubs or trees: Blend 1 part horticultural perlite, 1 part soil (either sand or loam) and 1 part peat or compost as a shrub and tree mix. Use this to backfill the holes when you plant new trees or shrubbery.

    • 3). For starting seeds: Combine 1 part peat and 1 part horticultural perlite to use as a seed-starting medium. This will provide the seedling with the proper moisture and support when it is sprouting and during initial stages of growth. Do not use perlite that contains added fertilizer for seed-starting.
