- The flowering maple is a fast growing shrub from the Malvaceae family. Flowering maples produce blossoms in the spring months of May and June. The blossoms have five large petals that droop in the shape of a lantern. Each flowering maple bloom has both male and female organs that vary in color from white, yellow, pink or red depending on the type. The leaves on the flowering maple may cause skin irritation in some people.
- Choose a planting location that receives partial shade with the majority of the sunlight during the morning hours. Verify the soil is well draining and avoid planting the flowering maple in a sandy soil. Flowering maples do not respond well to dry, drought-like conditions. Set the tree in a planting hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and deep enough so the top of the ball is at ground level.
- The flowering maple prefers a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic compost covering the root ball area. Mulch assists with holding moisture in the soil during the hot summer months. You may need to provide the soil over the root ball with a minimum of 1 inch supplemental water each week during periods of dry weather.
