How to Not Overextend an Extension Ladder

    • 1). Check to see that the rope and pulley system, the spring-operated rung locks and the cap guides are in good working order. Check also to see that the fly (or upper) section of the ladder slides smoothly within the base section.

    • 2). Stand the ladder on a solid, level base. If the ladder has leg levelers, you may be able to work on uneven ground, but the ladder rungs must be horizontal for safe ladder operation.

    • 3). Hold the ladder away from the building, vertically.

    • 4). Reach around behind the ladder and grasp the rope on the back side. Pull on the rope to lift the fly section of the ladder. Raise the fly section to the point where the rung locks click past the top rung of the base section. Release the tension on the rope, and the rung locks should grasp onto the top rung.

    • 5). Lean the ladder in toward the building until the top of the ladder rests against the building. Move the feet of the ladder closer or farther away from the building until the flat tops of the rungs are perpendicular to the building face.
